Author Biography

Chris Erwood CTA ATT TEP has 35+ years practical experience at senior level within the field of estate and trust taxation reflecting a balanced mix of HMRC, Big 4 Accountancy and FTSE100 Industry background. Chris is the tax director of Erwood & Associates Ltd which provides a specialist capital taxes consultancy service to the HNWI client and their professional advisors. She is a popular circuit lecturer, regular contributor to technical journals, published technical author in her specialist field of IHT, Estate and (onshore/offshore) Trust taxation and expert consultant to the South West professional forum. A former tutor and external examiner on the tax module of the STEP Diploma programme, Chris is a quality assurance manager on the CIOT chartered tax adviser exam programme. Iris Wunschmann-Lyall is a solicitor and specialises in estate planning, trusts, probate and tax related matters and is a Registered Trust and Estate Practitioner. Rebecca Cave is a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser, whose primary role is consultant tax editor at AccountingWEB.co.uk. She also writes newsletters for various other publishers and edits Bloomsbury's Tax Rates and Tables. Donald Drysdale has written extensively for the professional tax press. He was a senior tax partner at KPMG, with a varied client list including quoted companies, family businesses, individuals and trusts, before taking on national responsibility for directing UK-wide tax technology, first at KPMG and later at PwC. He later became Assistant Director of Tax at ICAS, dealing with HM Treasury and HMRC on corporate, international, small business, capital taxes and private client tax issues and tax technology topics, while also providing support to ICAS members. He now concentrates full time on his activities as a freelance tax author and editor through his company Taxing Words Ltd. When not writing, he enjoys driving his meticulously restored 1964 Morris Minor 1000 Tourer known as 'Trafalgar'. Pete Miller has nearly 32 years' experience in tax, covering all aspects of business and corporation tax issues. Pete founded The Miller Partnership in 2011 to offer expert advice on all business tax issues to other advisers, particularly lawyers and accountants. Specialist areas include reorganisations and reconstructions, the substantial shareholdings exemption, the transactions in securities rules, the anti-phoenixing rules, HMRC clearances, taxation of intangible assets and the patent box legislation. Pete speaks and writes regularly on tax issues and is lead author of Taxation of Company Reorganisations (Bloomsbury Professional, 6th Edition due May 2019). Satwaki Chanda is a tax lawyer with a First Class degree in Mathematics. His experience covers a variety of matters, including corporate transactional work, advising entrepreneurs and SMEs, investment funds and real estate planning. Called to the Bar in 1992, he originally specialised in commercial litigation, but switched to tax in 1998 when he joined a Big Four accountancy practice. He has also worked for City law firms, but is now a freelance author. He has contributed to various practitioner textbooks as well as hosting the educational website: Tax Notes (taxnotes.co.uk), which contains articles on UK taxation, with a particular emphasis on business and property taxes. Satwaki is co-author of Bloomsbury Professional Corporation Tax Annual, CGT Reliefs for Entrepreneurs and also contributes to Buy-to-Let Property Tax Handbook. Sarah Laing is a Chartered Tax Adviser, having worked for both small and Big 4 firms. An established writer, she has contributed to a range of highly regarded tax publications. She is the news editor and a director of TaxationWeb Limited, which provides free information and resources on UK taxes to taxpayers and professionals. Mark McLaughlin CTA (Fellow) ATT (Fellow) TEP TAX CONSULTANT From January 1998 until December 2018, Mark was a consultant in his own tax practice, Mark McLaughlin Associates, which provided tax consultancy and support services to professional firms throughout the UK. Mark is now a consultant with The TACS Partnership, an independent tax advisory firm that provides high quality, independent advice on all UK taxation matters. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation's Private Client (UK and International) Sub-Committees. Mark is also a lecturer, and has featured in online tax lectures for Tolley Seminars Online. TAX AUTHOR AND EDITOR Mark is the Editor of the Core Tax Annuals 2006/07 to 2019/20 (Bloomsbury Professional), and is a co-author of the 'Inheritance Tax' Annuals 2006/07 to 2019/20 (Bloomsbury Professional). Andrew has over 30 years' experience in VAT having spent 7 years in HM Customs & Excise, firstly as a VAT inspector, then as a departmental trainer, and finally in a headquarters policy unit dealing with the introduction of the EU single market. After leaving Customs he joined Deloitte & Touche as a VAT consultant in Liverpool and then Manchester, where he qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser. Andrew then moved to London where he worked on formulating indirect tax planning ideas, writing articles for tax publications, and was author of Deloitte's Weekly VAT News. From Deloitte's, Andrew moved to Ernst & Young in Manchester as a senior indirect tax consultant, where he managed the indirect tax affairs of several multi-national companies. Andrew is a specialist in international tax, land and property issues and also a lecturer on VAT issues. He was a VAT adviser to the Forum of Private Business and represented them quarterly on the Joint VAT Consultative Committee. Andrew is author of Bloomsbury Professional Value Added Tax (previously Tottel's Value Added Tax). Sarah Bradford BA(Hons), FCA, CTA (Fellow) is the director of WriteTax Ltd and WriteTax Consultancy Services Ltd which provide technical writing and consultancy services on tax and National Insurance contributions.
