Reviews

Do you know what a Guinea Hen is? It is a fowl, much like a chicken, with flaps hanging on either side of their beaks. Originating in South Africa, these birds make excellent guard birds. Charlie is a Guinea Hen. He lives with a flock of Guinea Hens and a kind old lady who feeds them. That is until a big storm sweeps Charlie away to unfamiliar territory. Lost and cold, Charlie wanders onto another farm and meets all kinds of farm animals. The young couple who own the farm start caring for Charlie and he quickly feels quite at home. Even the cats like him. And when winter comes and it gets really cold, the couple surprise Charlie with a little building for his own nest - a home of his own. Robin Vergato's picture book story, Charlie Finds A Home: A Homeless Guinea Hen's Journey, is a true story. The author traces Charlie's adventures as he comes to live with a young couple on the farm and how he quickly adjusts from living with a flock of Guinea Hens to living as the only Guinea Hen amongst other types of farm animals. This is a very informative book which traces the adventures of one Guinea Hen named Charlie. As the reader follows Charlie's adventures, they learn more about Guinea Hens: what they like to eat, where they like to nest, and that they can't fly very high. There is also a detailed information page at the end that tells the reader more about Guinea Hens and where they originated. With lively, colorful illustrations, this is a good book to teach young readers about a specific fowl/bird. - Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers' Favorite
