Description
Odysseus is a hero but all he really wants to do is defeat the Trojans and go home. The trouble is both those tasks will take a bit longer than he hoped, and he'll need all his cunning to get there. What's more, once he does, there will be more challenges in store! Bloomsbury High Low books encourage and support reading practice by providing gripping, age-appropriate and illustrated stories for struggling and reluctant readers, those with dyslexia, or those with English as an additional language. Printed on tinted paper with a dyslexia friendly font, Odysseus is aimed at readers aged 9+ and has a manageable length (96 pages) and reading age (7+). Produced in association with reading experts at Catch Up, a charity which aims to address underachievement caused by literacy and numeracy difficulties.
Author Biography
Benjamin Hulme-Cross has written over thirty books for struggling readers. Prior to writing full time, Ben worked as English Literature Publisher for an international publishing company, commissioning and editing novels and plays for secondary schools. Ben's favourite thing about being a writer is playing around with ideas for stories in his head and daydreaming, so not much has changed from his childhood.
ReviewsThis series of books have been a big hit with my lower ability readers and children with EAL. It has been so refreshing to find high-interest reading books that are filled with great vocabulary to get our teeth into. -- Natalie Rogers * Year 6 teacher and Writing Lead * This fabulous Dyslexia friendly mini-series is the perfect accompaniment to any topic on mythology. The perfect way to extend children's knowledge around topics they are learning in class in an easy to access grown-up looking format. I love that the text is broken up by pictures and is spaced well, meaning they are more accessible to those who struggle with larger chunks of text whilst still looking to all intents and purposes like the friends they are helping. The fact these books are printed on yellow paper further increases their accessibility. -- Starlight and Stories * starlightandstories.com * Benjamin Hulme-Cross does a great job of concisely retelling each of these gripping adventures. Aimed at children of 10+ with a reading age of 8+, these classic stories are compelling reads, full of action. There are wonderful illustrations throughout each book from Alessia Trunfio which add to the atmosphere of each story. * North Somerset Teachers' Book Award Blog * The language brings to life the stories in a most accessible way. Boys especially will love the challenges that Odysseus has to overcome before returning home and being reunited with his wife. Strongly recommended. * The English Association *
