Description
Posadas County, New Mexico, is in the news. NightZone, a mammoth astronomy theme park, is bringing in jobs, media, and such new infrastructure as a slick narrow-gauge railway to transport tourists from the village of Posadas to the tramway running up the mesa to the project's site. And the Posadas High School girls' volleyball team is on a hot winn
Author Biography
Steven F. Havill lives with his wife of more than forty years, Kathleen, in New Mexico. He is the author of more than twenty novels, taught secondary schools for 25 years, and recently earned an AAS degree in gunsmithing. NightZone is the 19th novel in his sweeping Posadas County Mystery Series.
ReviewsA solid book in a very good series. I always enjoying catching up with Posadas County, New Mexico.--NetGalley Another entry into the Posadas County Mysteries. Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman and her colleagues piece together and connect the dots of a strange murder of the local high school volleyball coach. Stacie Willis Stewart, wife of the local bank president steps into The Spree (the local grocer), leaving her dog and child in her car one sunny morning. Stacie disappears and is missing. Things take bad turn when volleyball coach Clint Scott is found dead from four gunshot wounds in the girl's locker room at school. Law enforcement untangles a mess of stories and possible suspects to finally find the killer and have a tense standoff. There are a lot of story lines to follow in this book that fans of Havill will enjoy. I found the story interesting and the characters to be real with the occasional surprise that's always nice to have in a good story. I will be reading more from this author though this is my first to read of his.--redinkreview Come Dark: The Posadas County Mysteries from its distinctive cover to the last page is a complex police procedural style mystery and one heck of a read.--Kevin's Corner Havill's novels are always excellent, and I enjoyed this one immensely. There's new mysteries, plenty of time with beloved characters and fantastic use of location. Highly recommended.--NetGalley I opened Come Dark A Posadas County Mystery with anticipation of a good read. I was not disappointed. Come Dark is the 21st of this series. Imagine that! Twenty-one mysteries using the same characters and the same locale, and Havill can still write new and intriguing stories of people whom fans have grown to know and care about. Estelle does her usual job of sorting out everything and comes out on top once again. As we expect her to. But getting there is the good part of this really good read. Turning the pages of Come Dark is like arriving back in your home town where everyone knows everyone and folk look out for each other.--Bookloons In Havill's strong 21st mystery set in New Mexico (after 2015's Blood Sweep), a series of major and minor events tax the meager resources of the Posadas County's Sheriff's Department. NightZone--a "mammoth astronomy theme park project," complete with a radio telescope array and a hotel atop a mesa--is near completion. It's attracting lots of media attention, as is the girls' high school volleyball team, which is on a 65-game winning streak. Meanwhile, undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman looks into the disappearance of Stacie Stewart, an auditor with the local electric cooperative, who left her baby and dog in a sweltering car; spray-paint vandalism at both NightZone and the high school; and the fatal shooting of girls' volleyball coach Clint Scott in the girls' shower room. Series regulars, including former undersheriff Bill Gastner, interact with a number of intriguing new characters, including Miles Waddell, the owner and sole funder of NightZone. Newcomers will enjoy this entry as much as longtime fans. (Apr.)--PW Interesting plot and characters, with murder and mayhem in every direction. With suspicions running amok and plenty of suspects from which to choose; there is panic and desperation as some characters try to maintain the exposure of their secrets. I really enjoyed Havill's way with words as well; for the most part, his characters say exactly what you'd expect them to given the circumstances. An author's failure to do this is a sure-fire way to ensure I'll pull the plug on the book and allow my interest to flat-line... This was my first introduction to Mr. Havill; overall, it's a well-written piece of fiction that has left me searching for more of his books, and keeping my eyes open for other of his books yet to come. Highly recommended!--NetGalley It was fun to follow all of these threads, guessing (wrong) the whole time about what was going on. This is a very nice police procedural with touches of wry humor--full of quirky characters.--Suspense Magazine The story makes you think and try to put the pieces together. I gave this book 4 stars.--NetGalley The Posadas, New Mexico, High School girls' volleyball team is on a lengthy winning streak, attracting statewide attention for itself and coach Clint Scott. One of Scott's former players, Stacie Willis Stewart, now married with a child of her own, abandons her child and dog in a closed car on a hot day and disappears. There were whispers about Coach Scott and Stacie, then and now. Sometime the night before Stacie vanished, someone shot Coach Scott while he was taking a shower after another winning volleyball match. Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman, Sheriff Robert Torrez, and retired sheriff Bill Gastner have their hands full with a murder and a missing person who may or may not be connected to the shooting. The twenty-first Posadas mystery is a compelling mix of dusty small-town ambiance, complex plotting, and an authorial voice imbued with compassionate humanity. Each of the Posadas novels plumbs the collective heartbeat of a community. Those beating hearts belong to characters who range from despicable to saintly, but together they make up one of the most vivid worlds in mystery fiction.--Booklist This installment of the Posadas County Mysteries features Undersheriff Estelle Guzman as she tries to solve the murder of a local coach. Padrino Bill Gaster is also featured. Estelle has a potential suspect in mind, if she can find her. Another incident brings more light on the case before the final puzzle piece finally clicks into place. Fans of the series will not be disappointed.--NetGalley
