Description

'On all my travels, if I had the Gospels, Paul's letter to the Romans and Andrew Ollerton's book I would need nothing else!' Sir David Suchet With his trademark straightforward teaching style, Andrew Ollerton guides readers through Romans - one of the most theologically complex books of the Bible - to discover how an understanding of Paul's longest letter unlocks the whole story of Scripture and helps us make sense of life. It's been said that if the New Testament were the Himalayas, Paul's Epistle to the Romans would be Mount Everest. The chapters of this book therefore imagine the contents of the letter as a great mountain landscape - complex, challenging but highly rewarding. Together, we will take on the challenge of ascending to the summit, taking in the view and then descending to put it into practice on the other side. Readers will not only come away with a greater understanding of Romans, but as invigorated disciples, equipped for the adventure of life and faith, and emboldened to share the Gospel with others. Each chapter includes suggested Bible readings and questions for reflection, making this book a great choice for devotional reading for Lent 2023. Romans is a perfect follow-up read for fans of Andrew's first book The Bible, those who've recently completed Bible Society's 'The Bible Course', or the Alpha course.

Reviews

On all my travels, if I had the Gospels, Paul's letter to the Romans and Andrew Ollerton's book I would need nothing else! * Sir David Suchet * In this highly engaging exploration of the letter to the Roman churches, Andrew Ollerton's natural and communicative style provides readers with an accessible account of the ancient truths in this magisterial letter. * Dr Lucy Peppiatt, author and principal of Westminster Theological College * Fresh, succinct, simple, yet with depth and insight, this survey of Romans will be invaluable to new as well as seasoned readers of this most important letter of Paul. * Rev Charles Price, author and pastor, The Peoples Church, Toronto * St Paul's Romans is one of the most important books of the Bible, but not the easiest. Andrew Ollerton has a gift for not only communicating it accessibly but also showing its deep and practical relevance to life now. * David F. Ford, Emeritus Regius Professor of Divinity, University of Cambridge * Andrew's book has been both a welcomed education and inspiration. It has given me greater understanding and confidence of the pivotal place of Romans in our discipleship and mission. I believe it is a must-read for anyone wanting to better equip themselves in understanding, and believing, why we should not be "ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes" . . . I love it! * Rev Mark Greenwood, National Evangelist and Head of Evangelism, Elim Churches UK * A practical and rich companion to help you journey through the book of Romans. Deep theology sits wonderfully alongside incredibly relatable illustrations in this powerful, challenging and hopeful book. * Gavin Calver, CEO, Evangelical Alliance * Romans is one of the great masterpieces of Scripture, and Dr Ollerton offers us an introduction to that masterpiece with the language, questions, and ideas of our world. His clear analogies, engaging communication and practical questions create an invitation to read this Gospel letter with confidence. * Canon Sarah Yardley, Mission Lead of Creation Fest UK * A grasp of the truth of Paul's epistle to the Romans is utterly life changing, yet so many believers are happier sticking to the gospels or the psalms. Andrew Ollerton's book is such an attractive, approachable invitation to modern believers to plumb its depths and ascend its heights. * Terry Virgo, founder of Newfrontiers * Every Christian needs to have a grasp of Paul's letter to the Romans. You will find no wiser guide to this earth-shaking letter than this accessible and helpful book which navigates every difficulty with both ease and enthusiasm. Recommended! * Rev Canon J.John * Andrew manages to take the Scripture and make it relevant to today's audience. A blend of the serious and humorous, masterly conveyed in its original context. * Pastor Mick Fleming, author of Blown Away * This book unravels the good news of the gospel: that hope, freedom and salvation can emphatically impact and change those who encounter and receive it. The heart of God connecting with the lost, abandoned and broken in society who in turn are sent with the same transforming message. * Nigel Langford, Bible Society * This is an enlightening and engaging guide to the highest peak in the mountain range of new testament letters. Andrew Ollerton makes difficult paths seem easy, as he takes us on this tour. We get insights into the cultural setting of the Bible, as well as how we should apply it to life today. * Peter Williams, Principal, Tyndale House * Andrew's historical insights and storytelling make it a great resource for small groups and I will be journeying through it again with friends. Ultimately, this book is a valuable reminder of the reality of the Gospel. * Andy Frost, Share Jesus International *
