Description
The Dramatic Text Workbook and Video explores the expressive potential of language and how you, as an actor, director or teacher, can develop the skills to release that potential in rehearsal and performance. Written by acclaimed voice teachers David Carey and Rebecca Clark Carey, this practical textbook shows how to bring together the power of language with voice and provides practical approaches to each aspect of verbal expression with the aid of classical and modern scenes and speeches. Chapters consider: * Sound: speech sounds and how to use them more expressively * Image: bringing life and specificity to images when you speak * Sense: how to focus on the most significant words and phrases in a speech or scene * Rhythm: how rhythm is created and used in both verse and prose * Argument: the structure or logic of language The Dramatic Text Workbook and Video, a new edition of The Verbal Arts Workbook, includes a revised introduction, updated reading lists and access to over 90 minutes of online video workshops, exploring the key techniques and tactics discussed in the book.

ReviewsBears an unparalleled depth and range of substance as it speaks to both students and their teachers in a clear and easy voice . . . most of the exercises described here feel fresh, current, alive and inventive . . . The Verbal Arts Workbook is a must have for the voice practitioner, text coach, actor or director. It should easily take its place with the other canonical texts written about the expressive power of language on the stage * Voice and Speech Review (VASTA), 2013 on the first edition * The Careys prove through their comprehensive process that the physically engaged expression of language is intention, is action. A cogent and practical guide to an actor's engagement with heightened text. * Kate Hennig, Associat Artistic Director, Shaw Festival, Canada * I have had the privilege of being in rehearsals rooms with Rebecca and/or David Carey for 25 years. This book proves why I never want to work on a play without one of them by my side: they profoundly understand that language is the key to unlock the heart of any drama. * Bill Rauch, Artistic Director, Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center, USA * Working with David and Rebecca Carey during my three years training at RADA unequivocally changed me as an actor. I developed strength, expressiveness and confidence with my voice; and the techniques I took away have been applied on every dramatic text I've worked on since. * Asif Khan, actor and writer, UK *
