Description

Master the principles of structural dynamics with this comprehensive and self-contained textbook, with key theoretical concepts explained through real-world engineering applications. The theory of natural modes of vibration, the finite element method and the dynamic response of structures is balanced with practical applications to give students a thorough contextual understanding of the subject. Enhanced coverage of damping, rotating systems, and parametric excitation provides students with superior understanding of these essential topics. Examples and homework problems, closely linked to real-world applications, enrich and deepen student understanding. Curated mathematical appendices equip students with all the tools necessary to excel, without disrupting coverage of core topics. Containing all the material needed for a one- or two-semester course, and accompanied online by Matlab code, this authoritative textbook is the ideal introduction for graduate students in aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering.

Author Biography

Peretz P. Friedmannis the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is a former Editor-in-Chief of theAIAA Journal, and was awarded the 2022 Reed Aeronautics Award - the highest honor bestowed by AIAA for notable achievements in aeronautics - as well as the Alexander Klemin Award, the highest honor bestowed by the VFS for advancing the field of vertical flight aeronautics. He is a Fellow of AIAA and an Honorary Fellow of VFS. George A. Lesieutre is Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Aerospace Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. He is a Fellow of the AIAA and was awarded the SPIE Lifetime Achievement Award in Smart Structures and Materials. Daning Huang is Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, where his research focuses on hypersonic aeroelasticity and aerothermoelasticity, multi-disciplinary analysis and design, reduced-order modeling of nonlinear dynamical systems, and high-performance computing.

Reviews

'Structural dynamics is one of the central topics in all of engineering, and especially as applied to aerospace and mechanical systems. The authors have provided a sound and novel treatment of this subject. While the standard topics are well treated, the discussion of Hamilton's Principle and Lagrange's equations is particularly well done. Also, the authors introduce the concept of nonconservative forces and dynamic instability through the use of a follower force. Given the expertise and experience of the authors, it is not surprising that the inclusion of rotating systems (rotorcraft and turbomachinery) is a welcome addition, a topic too often neglected in other texts on structural dynamics. The stability of systems with periodic (in time) coefficients is nicely done, and the subject of damping is more extensively and insightfully treated than in many texts. Engineers in academe and industry will find this a useful and attractive treatment of the subject and a book they may well want to add to their library or course syllabus.' Earl Dowell, Duke University 'An authoritative overview of structural dynamics, from its fundamental principles to their application in aerospace and mechanical engineering. The book presents the material rigorously and comprehensively, including prerequisite concepts, an extensive collection of examples and problems, details on numerical methods, and advanced topics related to structural dynamics of rotating and periodic systems. It is an excellent resource for graduate students, educators, and professionals in the field.' Cristina Riso, Georgia Institute of Technology 'Professor Friedmann and his colleagues have written a must-read comprehensive book for students and engineers who want to enjoy the dynamics of flexible structures. It is the fruit of Professor Friedmann's decades of teaching and research experience. Read this book, and you will appreciate it as one of the best in the category.' Weihua Su, University of Alabama 'The authors have created an outstanding book that is highly recommended both for graduate-level instruction and as a reference text for structural dynamics researchers. I am not aware of any single reference text on structural dynamics that covers so many different important topics so thoroughly. Their approach combines the best of the classic theoretical reference texts along with modern computational approaches that are found in the commercially available analysis programs used by the aerospace industry.' John Kosmatka, University of California, San Diego 'The authors are well-known experts and active researchers in the subject area. They have provided a very thorough, comprehensive, and authoritative treatment of structural dynamics. I wish I could have had access to such an excellent book when I was a graduate student. Strongly recommend it to any students who are interested in this subject, including rotorcraft dynamics.' Wenbin Yu, Purdue University, Indiana
