Recognising the need for a convenient edition of Gongora for English readers and students, Dr J. W. Barker has here prepared a selection which, in addition to showing Gongora's versatility and proneness to experiment in verse forms, makes available a number of poems to be read with delight for their music, beauty, and simple yet artificial charm. The poems are dated and chronologically arranged to enable the critical reader to assess the worth of Gongora's poetry, and to judge independently the emergence and development of the style called gongorismo. This collection was first published in 1942.
