Description

With full color throughout, this unique text provides an accessible yet rigorous introduction to the basic principles, technology, and applications of nanophotonics. It explains key physical concepts such as quantum confinement in semiconductors, light confinement in metal and dielectric nanostructures, and wave coupling in nanostructures, and describes how they can be applied in lighting sources, lasers, photonic circuitry, and photovoltaic systems. Readers will gain an intuitive insight into the commercial implementation of nanophotonic components, in both current and potential future devices, as well as challenges facing the field. The fundamentals of semiconductor optics, optical material properties, and light propagation are included, and new and emerging fields such as colloidal photonics, Si-based photonics, nanoplasmonics, and bioinspired photonics are all discussed. This is the 'go-to' guide for graduate students and researchers in electrical engineering who are interested in nanophotonics, and students taking nanophotonics courses.

Author Biography

Sergey V. Gaponenko is a professor and Head of the Laboratory of Nano-optics at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. He is also the author of Introduction to Nanophotonics (Cambridge, 2010) and Optical Properties of Semiconductor Nanocrystals (Cambridge, 1999). Hilmi Volkan Demir is a professor at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and a founder and director of the University's Luminous! Centre of Excellence for Semiconductor Lighting and Displays.

Reviews

'This book addresses one of the major recent topics in photonics. It is filling a gap, as for the first time applications of nanophotonics are properly introduced and discussed. It is written by two world-renowned experts in the field, and will represent an unmissable title for anyone wishing to pursue investigations in this topic.' Pierre-Michel Adam, Universite de Technologie de Troyes 'This authoritative text by Professors Gaponenko and Demir is a comprehensive guide to the rapidly growing field of applied nanophotonics. The authors guide the reader through the basics of nanophotonics in an accessible manner, describing both electron and electromagnetic wave confinement. The book goes on to describe advanced light sources, photonic circuitry, photovoltaics, colloidal photonics and biosensing. It is essential reading for graduate students, researchers, and professionals working in nanophotonics.' Tatiana Perova, Trinity College Dublin
