Description

Investigations of multi-physical processes in geomaterials have gained increasing attention due to the ongoing interest in solving complex geoenvironmental problems. This book provides a comprehensive exposition of the classical theory of thermo-poroelasticity, complemented by complete examples to problems in thermo-poromechanics that are used to validate computational results from multi-physics codes used in practice. The methodologies offer an insight into real-life problems related to modern environmental geosciences, including nuclear waste management, geologic sequestration of greenhouse gases to mitigate climate change, and the impact of energy resources recovery on groundwater resources. A strong focus is placed on analytical approaches to benchmark the accuracy of the computational approaches that are ultimately used in real-life problems. The extensive coverage of both theory and applications in thermo-poroelasticity and geomechanics provides a unified presentation of the topics, making this an accessible and invaluable resource for researchers, students or practitioners in the field.

Author Biography

A. P. S. Selvadurai is William Scott Professor and James McGill Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics at McGill University, Montreal. He is the recipient of the Max Planck Research Prize and the Humboldt Award and in 2013 received the Maurice A. Biot Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Eric Reissner Medal from the International Conference on Computational and Experimental Engineering and Sciences (ICCES). He has published extensively in archival journals devoted to mechanics and applied mathematics, geomechanics, and computational and experimental mechanics. He is the author of seven books including Elasticity and Geomechanics (with R. O. Davis, Cambridge, 1996) and Plasticity and Geomechanics (with R.O. Davis, Cambridge, 2002). A. P. Suvorov is a Research Associate in the Environmental Geomechanics group at the Department of Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics, McGill University, Montreal. He has worked in the field of geomechanics and poromechanics since 2008. His main interests are mathematical modelling of multi-physics processes, continuum mechanics, mechanics of solids and computational geomechanics. His journal publications are mainly devoted to the mechanics of composite materials and thermo-poromechanics.

Reviews

'Selvadurai and Suvorov provide a thorough and rigorous introduction to the foundations of thermo-poro-mechanics of fluid-infiltrated elastic media, focused on geophysical and geotechnical applications. Fundamental analytical solutions are derived for simple geometries (slits, cylinders, spheres) and compared to results of popular computational methodologies, with results serving as the basis for application to key current areas of geoscience and geotechnology.' James R. Rice, Harvard University, Massachusetts
