The author J. Michael Moriarty never knew or met Hunter Thompson. Moriarty was learning how to become a reporter while HST was crashing the boards at the Rolling Stone with Fear and Loathing. He went to law school after journalism school, hoping to become an investigative reporter. That didn't happen, so Moriarty started practicing law in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. Recently, Moriarty has redirected his efforts to writing again. First came the Hemingway stories (Hemingway's Retreat and Hemingway's Return to England).
