Reviews

Kirkus Review US:Fante was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his life's work of screenplays and novels. Ask The Dust, his second novel, was first published in 1939 and is reputedly one of his finest works. It portrays the life of a young man named Arturo Bandini whose days are spent dreaming of being great; the great writer, the great lover, the great Arturo Bandini! However reality is sadly different. 'I'm no writer: I'm no good in this world. No good at all just a cheap fake; never a writer nor lover,' or so moments of self-doubt tell him. 'The absurdity of a hopeless writer like myself buried in a cheap hotel in Los Angeles, California, of all places, writing banal things the world would never read and never get a chance to forget.' Penniless and surviving on a diet of oranges he walks the streets of Los Angeles looking for inspiration; a sand-infested town where the old come to live out their days. He meets Camilla, a waitress at a coffee bar, and a strange relationship ensues. When they are together Arturo loathes her and yet when apart an overwhelming obsession clouds his mind. He loves her and he has to have her. It's a never-to-be love story with sad and tragic consequences. (Kirkus UK)
