Biography for Michael Murphy Michael Murphy co-founded the Esalen Institute, in Big Sur, California. In 1980 he helped create the Esalen Institute's Soviet-American Exchange programme which promoted and foreshadowed greater communication between Soviet and American writers, social activists and political leaders.
