Description

American artist Alison Berger is known for her evocative, timeless blown-glass forms - light fixtures, functional objects, furnishings, and large-scale sculptures - that capture light. This stunning, first monograph will appeal to those interested in contemporary glasswork, glassblowing, art, and design. The first book to explore the innovative work and studio practice of internationally acclaimed Los Angeles-based glass artist Alison Berger.

Author Biography

Alison Berger trained as an architect, but after working as an architect for many years, she began to devote herself to her glass design full time in 1995. Her work includes several limited-edition lines of glass objects, lighting, and furniture that bridge her architectural and sculptural sensibilities, as well as ongoing large-scale, site-specific commissions. In addition to the lines she produces under her own name, Berger has designed objects for film and music videos, as well as fashion houses. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Corning Museum and has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her work is available through Holly Hunt showrooms in United States and at Plug Lighting in Los Angeles. Holly Hunt is the founder and CEO of HOLLY HUNT showrooms and collections, a leader in luxury home furnishings. Matilda McQuaid is Deputy Curatorial Director and Head of Textiles at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York, NY. Pilar Viladas, a freelance editor and writer, is Architecture and Design Editor for Town & Country and former design editor for T: The New York Times Style Magazine.

Reviews

"Among the works in "Alison Berger: Glass and Light" . . . is a pendant lamp of woven glass. "During the day it hovers in space, almost disappearing like a cobweb that goes unnoticed in the house until the light strikes it a certain way," Ms. Berger writes. "At night, the glass recedes even further, and shadows come boldly forward as vivid as a drawing on the wall." In her work, she evokes astrolabes, apothecary jars and other relics from the dawn of science." -New York Times "Out this fall from Rizzoli, Alison Berger: Glass and Light is a monograph documenting the most impressive lighting fixtures, furniture, and other objects incorporating the material that have come out of her Los Angeles studio since she established it in 1995." -Surface "To mark her accomplishments, Rizzoli has just released Alison Berger: Glass and Light ($65, rizzoliusa.com), a gorgeous hardcover retrospective that celebrates Berger's innovative Old World-yet-modern approach and numerous creative achievements." -Angeleno, Modern Luxury "Fans of Los Angeles-based lighting designer Alison Berger will enjoy this detailed look at her hand-blown work and artistic process. The oversized monograph includes more than 200 full-color photographs of Berger's glassworks, sketches, drawings and studio. For further details on the glass artist, read this Berger 2014 profile." -Los Angeles Times
