Description
Mysore Modern reconceptualizes modernity in India using the history of the Princely State of Mysore. In this forcefully argued work, Janaki Nair critiques earlier notions of the native states of India as spaces that were either defined entirely by the dominant narratives of colonial ational modernity or were relatively untouched by them.
Author Biography
Janaki Nair is professor of modern Indian history at the Centre for Historical Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, India. Her books include The Promise of the Metropolis: Bangalore's Twentieth Century.
Reviews"Mysore Modern presents a wide-ranging, forcefully argued, and impressively researched series of essays on the colonial and immediate post-colonial history of India's 'model' princely state, Mysore. It is a significant and valuable contribution to our understanding of the role princely states played in the history of modern India." -William Glover, University of Michigan
