Description

A moving portrait of grace and strength, Climb Against the Odds celebrates women with breast cancer who have joined The Breast Cancer Fund in one of their awareness-raising mountain climbs: Aconcagua (23,000 ft.), McKinley (20,300 ft.), and Fuji (12,389 ft.). Weaving together text and photographs of the climbs, journalist Mary Pappenfuss brings us on an unforgettable journey through mountains metaphoric and real. With riveting interviews, joyful photographs, resources, and information about the struggle against breast cancer, this is a tribute to remarkable women and an affirmation of life.

Author Biography

The Breast Cancer Fund identifies and advocates for elimination of environmental and other preventable causes of the disease. Founded in 1992, The Breast Cancer Fund works from the knowledge that breast cancer is not simply a personal tragedy, but a public health priority that demands action from all. Mary Papenfuss has worked in journalism for more than 20 years, including as an editor at the New York Post, New York Daily News, and San Francisco's Examiner. She was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer in 2000. She lives with her husband and two children in Northern California.

Reviews

"We climb mountains to demonstrate our determination to end breast cancer and all the pain it is causing so many. We climb to raise awareness, funding, and hope. Even though climbing is a risky undertaking, it is one we choose. Breast cancer gave us no choice. Climbing gives us a joyful way to express the strength we have found in working against the disease. Climbing is a metaphor for how we confront breast cancer - one step at a time, with the support of others." - Andrea R. Martin, Founder and Executive Director, The Breast Cancer Fund
