Description

Goya is often called the last of the Old Masters and the first of the Moderns. He is appreciated as a portrait painter; a creator of menacing and melancholy images in oils; a master of enigmatic, satirical and revolutionary drawings and etchings; the champion of Spanish people in the struggle against oppression; and the recorder of their life and their sufferings in war. This volume aims to bring out the moods of this artist, from the gaiety and tenderness of the tapestry cartoons painted for the Spanish royal palaces to the mysterious ferocity of the "Black Paintings" painted in old age for his own house. Also included are some of Goya's less well-known masterpieces. Enriqueta Harris is the author of "Velazquez". This series acts as an introduction to key artists and movements in art history. Each title contains 48 full-page colour plates, accompanied by extensive notes, and numerous comparative illustrations in colour or black and white, a concise introduction, select bibliography and detailed source information for the images. Monographs on individual artists also feature a brief chronology.
