Description

Featuring some 70 works - many of which have not been previously published - covering the last decade of Frederick McCubbin's life, this publication looks at a key period in the development of his art. Most well known for his evocative bush scenes, in this later period McCubbin focused on the landscape around his homes in South Yarra and at Mount Macedon, views of the docks and industry, city life, portraits and interiors. He was one of the first Australian artists to depict the modern world. The publication traces the radical changes in McCubbin's work - after viewing the works of JMW Turner, Claude Monet and John Constable in London and Paris in 1907 - and seeks to redefine this important Australian artist, showing the way he developed a freer and more expressive art through his handling of paint and use of bright glowing colours.
