Description

From Ben Jonson's The Alchemist to the anonymous A Yorkshire Tragedy, from Thomas Dekker's The Shoemakers' Holiday to John Ford's Tis Pity She's a Whore, this essential guide provides clear and lively information on 34 great Elizabethan and Jacobean plays. Each chapter includes information on the play's source, the story, the author, the historical context and the world of the play, as well as a section on the playwright's craft and the play's performance history.

Author Biography

Simon Trussler is co-editor of New Theatre Quarterly and author or editor of numerous books on drama and theatre, including Shakespearean Concepts (1989) and the award-winning Cambridge Illustrated History of British Theatre (1993). Formerly Reader in Drama at the University of London, he is now Professor and Senior Research Fellow at Rose Bruford College.

Reviews

"'Simon Trussler is the very best of guides to the riches of early modern drama, telling us so much about the plays' contexts and their significance, their craft and their power, and reminding us just how exciting these plays are on stage.' Professor Peter Holland"
