Readers are invited to travel across some of world's driest landscapes and discover the remarkable animals and plants that survive in desert climates, both hot and cold. Along the way, they will encounter over 300 rare and little known plants, animals, reptiles, birds and insects, casting new light on desert environments and revealing the abundance of life underlying their barren image. Through fifteen bright and graphic desert landscapes the book looks in detail at unusual species, their tactics for survival, nocturnal desert life, the desert food chain, lethal creatures and degrees of dryness.

Vassiliki Tzomaka is a designer and illustrator based in Colchester, UK. Inspired by the challenge of trying to grow a night-blooming cactus in her home country of Greece, Vassiliki created The Wilder West as part of her PhD at the Centre for Children's Book Illustration, Cambridge School of Art. She collected over 300 cacti and succulent species to create the book, drawing on her BSc in chemistry and MA in environmental studies to carefully observe each one and devise a narrative for introducing children to the environment of the desert.
