Description

The Arts and Crafts Movement was enthusiastically embraced by the many architects and designers who had become disenchanted with the results of the mass production of the mid-nineteenth century, and its instantly recognizable style left a legacy of design that remains influential to this day. This essential companion identifies the origins of the movement and celebrates the inspiration of its founder William Morris - craftsman, poet and social reformer. The achievements of such key exponents as Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Frank Lloyd Wright and Gustav Stickley are considered in detail and the distinguishing characteristics of each designer's contribution thoroughly analysed. There are comprehensive chapters on all aspects of Arts and Crafts style, including architecture, interiors, furniture, textiles, glass, ceramics, metalwork, printing and gardens. Illustrated with 300 meticulously researched images, this is a rich and invaluable general survey and an important work of reference for the collector. The ideals of the Arts and Crafts Movement continue to have relevance for the modern-day home owner. Whether through the restoration of old houses or in the expression of a philosophy, this book will assist the quest for authenticity in decoration and will encourage the appreciation and application of William Morris's dictum to 'have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or do not believe to be beautiful.'
