Hjilmar Dannevill travelled the world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, sometimes using aliases, sometimes disguising herself as a man. Arriving in New Zealand in 1911, she falsely presented herself as a qualified doctor. In May 1917, the authorities imprisoned her as a German spy. Who was she? Why did she lie? Was she a spy?
