The purpose of the book is to explain what buildings are and to describe the procedures and business arrangements whereby they are bought about. Of particular concern is the knowledge, conventions and terminology which the different specialists have in common, and which enables them to communicate with one another and to work as a team. Some novel generalisations are developed to explain this knowledge and to provide it with a structure. These help to 'cut a long story short' For every new building, the individuals working on it need a timely flow of information on its design and construction. This book is designed to make each member of the construction team aware of the wider issues of any project, the common knowledge and learning that they hold, and then to structure this knowledge to enable them to perform more efficiently and cost-effectively.
