Description
This book is the record of the conference held in Oxford in 1992 organised by CIRIA, and co-sponsored by the Health and Safety Executive, the British Tunnelling Society and the Medical Research Council's Hyperbaric Sciences Panel. Containing keynote lectures and refereed papers on bone necrosis, decompression illness, engineering design and construction, and the occupational health and safety of using compressed air and hyperbaric techniques in below-ground construction works, the book consolidates international medical and engineering knowledge and experience on the use of these necessary construction techniques, and looks to how they can be safely used in the future. Compressed air and other hyperbaric techniques are being adapted to natch advanced engineering capabilities in caisson and tunnelling excavation. In so doing collaboration between engineers, medical practitioners and health adn safety professionals is becoming increasingly important. These conference proceedings demonstrate not only that this longstanding collaboration is full of vigour, but also that there are many questions to be tackled. Records of ten discussion sessions are included, and a special fearute is a glossary of engineering, diving and medical terms.
