Langdon gives a broad overview of the evolution of science fiction, from the early twentieth century dime store novel to the soft agenda SF of the '90s. Authors examined include E. M. Forster, John W. Campbell, Philip K. Dick and Ursula K. Le Guin. The volume also includes an introduction to the large body of SF criticism, as well as a bibliographic essay and recommended further reading.

Brooks Landon is Professor of English at the University of Iowa. He is the author of Thomas Berger and The Aesthetics of Ambivalence:Rethinking Science Fiction Film in the Age of Electronic (Re) Production.
