A lieutenant of Hussars at the beginning of World War I, Edward Spears was the first British officer to be sent to the front in August 1914. As an outstanding liaison officer with the French Vth Army, he was an eyewitness of the most crucial phase of the war, leading to the victory of the Marnne.
