Author Biography
Ellie Wharton's career in children's books began in the rights department of a small publisher based on Fleet Street, London. So small in fact, that she actually wasthe rights department and worked hard to build up a successful portfolio of international clients, travelling to book fairs all over the world. It was during this time she began to discern the key criteria for making a children's book commercially viable and with these tools came up with her own successful series called Michael Recycle, following the trials and tribulations of a green superhero, which went on to sell over 200,000 copies worldwide. There are now four in this series with a further book coming out this year. Ellie was promoted to International Rights Manager, and following a stint in New York working freelance, she then became a Literary and Illustration Agent for children's books and following this Acting Publisher for the acclaimed children's publisher Egmont where she got to work with the likes of children's authors like Michael Morpurgo and Giles Andreae. In an effort to move with the times and learn new skills she went on to work for a digital publisher called Magic Town and learnt how to produce animated storybooks, which she turned into a business of her own going, freelance in 2014 focussing on in particular Top That's (now Imagine That's) Story Train project. It was then that her career went in a different direction and she set up a successful business in tea production called Positivitea. But in the background, storytelling was always her passion and she has since written the Dylan's Amazing Dinosaur series with writing partner Tamara Macfarlane and Simon & Schuster (appearing at Hay Festival with the books). Her latest venture with Tamara about unicorns will be published in August 2019 by Puffin. Tamara Macfarlane is the owner of the award winning Tales on Moon Lane Children's Bookshop, Moon Lane Education and Moon Lane Ink CIC. She has over 15 years' experience working with children and schools, and combines running the two bookshops with writing children's books. She currently has series with Hodder, Simon and Schuster, Troika Books and Puffin. Tamara has judged many high profile book awards (Costa, British Book Award, Muslim Young Writers Award) and has given talks at Bath, Oxford, Sharjah, Chengdu and Hay literary festivals. Whilst setting up Moon Lane Ink CIC in 2017, Tamara was mentored by the University of Cambridge Judge Business School's Social Ventures. She is part of a diversity steering group for Booktrust, and has contributed to the Booksellers Association's new diversity guide. Moon Lane Ink CIC is dedicated to raising equality in children's Books- equality of access, representation and roles in the publishing industry.
