Description
This book introduces students to an approach to teaching business communication that centres on language, empowering them to go beyond 'best practice' formulae or relying on intuition. Instead, it helps them understand how using language in particular ways can achieve particular effects, making it possible for them to use language in an informed and creative way in their current or future workplaces. The book uses rich authentic examples from business discourse to illustrate how the details of language use can help or hinder achieving the goals of companies, management and employees. Addressing a wide range of areas in business communication and introducing selected concepts from discourse analysis, the authors illustrate the workings of language across corporate contexts. There are many textbooks in corporate communication that help students read the clock. This one enables them to understand the clockwork.

ReviewsRather than prescribing the same old (often misconceived) advice about language use, this book encourages the reader to understand how language works, to analyse it, and to produce it in an effective and context sensitive manner. I highly recommend it to anyone studying corporate communication. * Jonathan Clifton, Universite de Valenciennes, France * This is a vital resource book for anyone studying or teaching business communication. There is so often a gap between sensing how language works in real business contexts, and knowing how to analyse it with a view to meeting the discursive challenges of the business world. The case studies and 'over to you' sections bring the theory to life and help readers to build connections with their own experience. * Ruth Breeze, Universidad de Navarra, Spain * A richly exemplified, comprehensive, and much-needed linguistic introduction to business and corporate communication by two leading experts in the field. Highly accessible and engagingly written, it invites readers to join the authors in the joint exploration of the topic at hand. * Zsofia Demjen, University College London, UK *
