Louis Stone was born in England in 1871. He came to Sydney in 1884 and lived for some time in Redfern and Waterloo, the suburbs in which he set Jonah. He trained as a primary schoolteacher, and took his first position in 1895. His other works include Betty Wayside, a novel published in 1915, and a play, The Lap Of The Gods, published in 1923. He died in 1935.
